Plugin Comparison

Postby snapshooter87 on Wed Feb 20, 2008 7:03 am

Hi.
I'd like to know what differences there are between XDEPTH and the plugin released by Mediachance.com last August, which works with a single file. (and why is it only available for CS2 and CS3)
Also, does XDEPTH in any way relate to the new JPEG XR format that Microsoft is working on and who also released a free Pligin for CS2 andCS3. It's getting rather confusing.

Hi,
we couldn't find anything similar to XDepth at mediachance.com. Could you please post the link here on the forum ?

As for your other question, XDepth is not related to Microsoft or the Jpeg (Joint Photographic Expert Group) - meaning our company is not affiliated with those organizations.
XDepth HDR as a "file format" does relate somehow to "Jpeg XR", meaning that it can be "compared to".
XDepth HDR offers one of the new features that Jpeg XR introduced (being HDR support), but being compatible with standard Jpeg-1 and offering much more quality given the same file size.

Think of it this way:
- Jpeg XR is going to be a sort of "Jpeg 2000": a new file format with new features but not compatible with the popular ".jpg" format.
- XDepth HDR is going to be an "enhanced jpeg": a ".jpg"-compatible file format with new features injected into it.

Please let me know if this clarified it a bit more.
